It's that time of year again! The Honeycrisp apples are in stores near you (if you are lucky) and I'm in heaven! And using exclamations points with abandon!!!
It's official - I have an apple obsession.
Red Delicious? More like "Red NOT Delicious" - those things suck eggs. Thick chewy skin, watery tasting mediumly sweet flesh...bleah. You want delicious? Go for the Golden Delicious, which are always a crowd pleaser. Nice, smooth thinnish skin, good flavor. Texture a bit weak, but overall a dependable standard.
MacIntosh? A nostalgic favorite for me, since the house I grew up in had two fine specimens. We used to have to rake the little apples off the ground before we mowed the lawn, and one year my mom had the bright idea to hang a sign on the tree close to the road telling people to feel free to take the apples away with them. Apple cake, applesauce, and I'm still partial to a hunk of brie, a chunk of a baguette and MacIntosh apple slices for lunch.
Gala, Fiji, Braeburn...I feel neutral about them. They all have their strengths and weaknesses, but once you've had a Honeycrisp, there is no going back.
Aaaaahhh, my memory relishes that fall day, two years ago, when a package arrived for us. A friend, a fellow apple fanatic, had sent us a gift. Mind you, I was not yet an apple fanatic myself. No, I would have said that I loved apples, that they were my favorite fruit, but to special order them from an out-of-state orchard? Now that's just weird, am I right? I opened the box and beheld the apples in all their specialty-foam-padded glory, and snickered to myself. "Apples? OK, whatever. It was sweet of them to send us something."
And then. And then...I decided to try one, to see what was so special about these cradled and bruise-free things. Will I go on and on about the flavor, the bursting sweetness that is almost tart at the edges? Or perhaps the texture, so crisp yet tender, melting as you chew yet not too quickly, giving you something to savor as you roll it around in your mouth.
Ah, enough rhapsodizing. Go get one yourself:
