Power Plays
There has been so much going on in my life these day that I just can't share on-line.

It TOTALLY sucks!

I blog to release so much internal conflict, even when I am just goofing around when I write. As the kids get older, though, I've made an effort to preserve more privacy, detail less of the actual day-to-day identifying activities. With Pepper, in particular, I find myself editing. I don't want to share too much, because you know what happens? Suddenly your cute little puppet children of 3 and 4 and 5 begin to turn into real people. Let's call it the "Geppetto Syndrome."

Pepper turned 8 this week. I don't mean to discount the whole "babies-are-people-too" crowd, but lets face it. Anyone who has ever been responsible for the care and feeding of a 3 or 4 year old will attest to their basic animal natures and agree when I say that an 8 year old and a 4 year are two separate species.

So, Pepper had her birthday this week. She is a real person now, with changing likes and dislikes and unplumbed depths and interests and... WOW. There have been some interesting scenarios playing out among Pepper's peers lately. For example, we are involved in an activity that requires the adults in charge to keep their hands off and let the kids do all the work for the activity, and it has been a major challenge for me to sit back and offer guidance while trying to reconcile my personal feelings towards certain personalities.

Is that vague enough to keep it cloaked in mystery? I don't want to talk smack about any 7 or 8 year olds, but there is a certain Queen Bee vibe going on between some of our little charges which has me at a loss. Unfortunately, I really can't go into detail since it involves other little children than my own, but it is juicy and vaguely disturbing and just... bears close observation.

OK! Hey, talk about a tease, huh? I can say that it is interesting watching all the individual personalities come into play as they try to work as a team. One child in particular seems to delight in being contrary - flat out refusing to do what the other children want he/she to do, only to get upset when the rest of the group comes up with a solution that doesn't involve him/her. Just interesting to see, and helpful to me to give me a little perspective on what other parent's experiences must be like, since I only have my own to compare to.

Golly, I just can't stop with the vague-yet-juicy posting, huh? Let's see, what else is going on... uhm, hey! I know! Does anyone else get those freak fast growing hairs popping out of their skin every now and then? I remember once when I was like 23, I woke up one morning with a 2 inch wiry white hair growing out of my eyebrow, which was horrifying. Horrifying and AWESOMELY GROSS, man.

Got one of those on my neck this week. 'Bout an inch long and white. Gone now.

Done.

Yes, I have an 8 year-old and a 4 year-old, and they are definitely from different species!

The interactions of 8 year-old girls are not to be missed--only to be survived.
